I am applying to the Queens College MSED in Art Education program because I feel that it will help make me better teacher. There have been many changes and updates to how we teach art, and the MSED program is the best option to educate and improve my teaching style.

As a student, art was one class in which I always excelled. It was the one class where I always felt safe and important. By the time I was in high school, I knew that pursuing a career in teaching, specifically visual arts and art history, was the direction I wanted to take. While pursuing my undergraduate degree in Art Education, I decided that it would be in my best interest and the best interest of my future students if I were to also major in fine arts. As I continued my education in both majors, I found that I was not only learning to be a better artist, but also a better teacher of the subject. The art education portion gave me the information needed to create a proper lesson plan and portfolio to showcase my work. I was learning how to speak to, teach and accommodate students of all back grounds and meet their many individual needs. The fine arts portion helped me figure out different ways to implement lesson plans for individuals, as well as allow me to learn new types of art making or improve upon mediums I was already familiar with and using to create my own work. Bringing these two majors together would end up helping me not only accommodate students who were either afraid to try something new, or were still looking for the medium they excelled in, but it also gave me the background necessary to accommodate students with special needs.

What I hope to accomplish in the MSED in Art Education program is to be able to learn new and updated techniques in teaching visual arts to students. I feel that there are constant innovations and discoveries in teaching methodology, as well in techniques when it comes to teaching, especially those who are part of the special education population and English language learners. I feel that the best way for me to continue to grow as an visual arts educator is to pursue the MSED program at Queens College. I feel that everything I learned in my studies as an under grad in order to begin my career is invaluable, and after looking into different programs, have concluded that the best decision for me, career wise, would be to continue my education at Queens College. I sincerely hope that you consider me for the program and see me as an asset to the program. I work on a daily basis, with many kids from so many different backgrounds, many with IEPs, and they deserve to have the best academic experience possible. I want to be able to help give them that, and I know your program will give me that ability.
